UPPER RESPIRATORY TRACT INFECTIONS

'Upper respiratory tract infections' is a term used to describe any infections of the nose, sinuses around the nose, throat (pharynx), voice box (larynx), and windpipe (trachea), or airways (bronchi). These infections occur suddenly, frequently starting with a cold.1 While they are common in adults, children may be more likely to contract them.2

These respiratory infections are usually caused by viruses and bacteria. Viruses are easily transmitted and very contagious. A bacterial infection can also develop during the course of an upper respiratory tract infection.3 Such cases require medical attention from a doctor.4
